Chapter 13
The Mightiest of Sausages
As the sun had miraculously made an appearance that evening, Molly spent her shift on the Good Ship Haddock. What with the crisp air, twinkling lights, and Eddie of the Ears for company, it was actually not too terrible at all.
The first hour passed in a flash. Eddie was practically the only person in school who didnât seem to want to discuss the Waverleys. Instead, he told stories about how his uncle Ian had bought a cabin up in the country and was running a goat sanctuary from the living room.
However, once the dinner rush was over and the air was distinctly more shivery, Eddie didnât seem to be having quite so much fun. While Molly was used to the monotony and boredom and often used the time to come up with fantastical ghost stories in her head, her copilot was getting restless and fidgety in his trash bag prison.
âYou donât have to stick around,â Molly said, although she very much wanted him to. âI only have an hour left before I can punch out.â
A look of mischief spread across Eddieâs face, and his foil fins rustled with excitement. He went up to the railing separating the boardwalk from the beach, leaning over the edge and peering down. âHey, how many free portions of chips and fried pieces will you give me if I do a trick jump off the railings?â
Molly considered this. âNone. Because youâll be dead.â
âYou could at least have the decency to scatter them into my grave as they bury me,â said Eddie. âYou know, how some people do rose petals. I would have delicious shards of crispy batter.â
âI thought when you died you wanted to be shot out of a cannon into the sea.â
âTrue,â Eddie conceded. âThe batter might get soggy, then. Seriously, Iâm jumping. Havenât you always wanted to see a giant cod dive off a pier?â
âMore than Iâve ever wanted anything in my life.â
This seemed to be all the motivation Eddie needed. He clambered extremely inelegantly onto the railings, took a deep breath, then leaped the three yards down to the sand while pulling some kind of skateboarder pose in midair.
âWheeeeeeeâAAAARGHHHHHHHHHHHHH!â
The last syllable was full of anguish. Mollyâs heart jackhammered into her throat. She sprinted to the railing and followed the noise down. âEddie?â
In the darkness, she could just make out Eddie of the Ears crumpled in a ball, clutching his calf and whimpering despite clearly trying very hard not to. His foot hung at a strange angle that Margot would probably love to photograph. âMyâ¦ankle. Snapped. Owwwwwwwwww!â
Molly was about to dash down the concrete steps to see if he was okayâ¦until she realized how far the tide was coming in. As her legs began to tingle threateningly, she quickly backed away from the sand and on to the boardwalk.
âJust wait there,â she called hastily. âIâll call for help!â
âNooooo, come back!â he yelled. âCome here! Where are you going? Donât leave me here by myself. Help me up.â
Molly inched even farther backward.
